Blake Haygood creates a Seussian world of segmented tree branches, pullies, wheels, cogs and belts that float in space and snake across the canvas behind a faintly rusty veneer. His paintings have a slightly off kilter, lo-fi mechanical appearance, with some organic elements mixed in which give them the sort of surreal, dreamy feel one might get while visiting some strange factory on another planet. What does it all mean? Who knows? But there’s something intriguing about the way it pulls the viewer in. You probably won’t have dreams about it a year from now, but it’s damn nice to look at. —Kristopher Monroe

“Buck fever” runs through February 12 at Seattle's Platform Gallery, 114 3rd Ave S, 206.323.2808.

Hey kids, it’s robo-horsey! First, a plague of hideous pigs, now this. Over the holidays, these horrible, garish creatures descended on Seattle en masse, scorching citizens’ eyes with their loud, noxious hides and manes of many (far too many) colors. Who in god’s name thought this ugly pageant would be a good idea? We can all breath a collective sigh of relief now that they’re gone and hopefully put out to pasture for good. —Kristopher Monroe
